How Do Service Dogs Help Veterans?

Thursday, November 11th, is Veterans Day. Although continued recognition of our Veterans is meaningful, knowing what we can do to support them is essential. That's where service dogs come in. We want to take some time to highlight the awesome pups that work hard to be of assistance, and illustrate how service dogs help veterans every day!

The P.A.W.S Act

In August of 2021, President Biden passed a law that would change the lives of both Veterans and Service Dogs everywhere. Supporters of the P.A.W.S. Act received the good news after a ten year fight to pass the bill to law. Passing this law required the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to begin a new program in 2022. This program will take five years, and will partner Veterans with service dogs. During that time, the VA will track the progress, and will report back to Congress on the results. If the results of the temporary program work as well as suspected, Congress will adopt it full time! If implemented permanently, the program will expand to qualify beyond those with PTSD.

So, How Do Service Dogs Help Veterans?

There are a ton of ways that service dogs can help Veterans emotionally. For one, it's difficult to not feel better around a dog (actually, it's sort of impossible). Service dogs can help Veterans trust again, or ease their handler's anxiety. The task alone of caring for a dog and bonding with it may help - it allows routine and care back into their lives. Service dogs also help with simple physical tasks. Sometimes granting Veterans with a buddy who can help them get out of uncomfortable spaces, or wake them up from nightmares, can be enough.

How Can You Help?

President Biden passing the P.A.W.S. Act was only the beginning. There is still a five year show of support ahead, and it's going to take more than a successful run to solidify the Act. If you would like to show your support for the Act, there's a few things you can do.
1. K9's for Warriors has a great list of ways to support their efforts.
2. Become a Puppy Raiser in your area. (Here's how to become a Puppy Raiser in Bellingham, WA)
3. You can also choose to donate a percentage of your Furhaven order to a recognized charity of your choice. When you reach the checkout page at www.furhavenpetshop.com, just search for the charity you want to support, and we'll donate 2%!
