Some Helpful Tips To Keep Older Dogs Comfortable And Happy!

We love our dog buddies, young or old. As our dogs get older, pet owners have more and more of a responsibility to look out for them and make sure they're as healthy as possible. To make things a little easier, we've put together a few simple health tips for senior dogs.

1. Be Aware Of How Your Senior Dog Is Feeling

The health and well-being of dogs is important at all stages of life, but especially as dogs get older. Older dogs need more frequent check-ins, special foods and supplements, and gentler forms of exercise. At FurHaven it's recommended to take extra time to research a few basic health concerns that may pop up in senior dogs. That way, you can be prepared for the day when your pup enters their senior years.

2. Make Getting Around Easy And Accessible For Your Senior Dog

Moving can be tough for some of our senior dogs. A good way to help them out is by trying to make your house as accessible and friendly to move across as possible- for example, using our Steady Paws 3-Step Pet Stairs. Taking steps (no pun intended) toward making it easier for our older pals to move around your home is a great way to make sure your senior dog is happy and comfortable.

3. Give Massages To Alleviate Muscle SorenessAn older, white dog having it's head held by a human at FurHaven Pet Products

Your senior dog might have some sore or painful joints that are probably pretty bothersome. A good way to try and help out with soothing this pain is to give your pup a good massage. Doing so takes a bit of practice and knowledge, but your older dogs will absolutely adore you for it- and you're doing them a seriously big kindness!

4. Be Mindful Of Your Senior Dog's Exercise

Every dog loves to get out and about, but for our older friends you might need to be a little more attentive to when, where, and how they're exercising. Make sure to keep in mind their physical limits, as well as how much time they're spending romping around.

5. Find Your Dog A Comfy Orthopedic Bed For Their Joints

We want our senior furry friends to be as comfy as can be. If your companion is experiencing joint pain, an orthopedic bed might be the best fit for them. Almost all FurHaven dog beds are available with orthopedic foams, so check out our available beds- just make sure to select an orthopedic foam when you pick out your bed. Our orthopedic beds are a great help for making sure that your furry friends are comfortable, healthy, and happy!
